How to keep your brain fit

You probably already know that cardiovascular training is a great way to condition your heart, but did you know that it is a great way to protect your brain health as well?
Researchers from Japan, whose study was published in NeuroImage, found that older, aerobically fit men used their brains the same way young men did. Those older men who weren't fit did not.
Here's the skinny: young people use the left side of their brains to process information like short-term memory, language, and recalling people, objects, and events. They use the right side of their brains for short and long term memory recall. Older adults, however, use both sides of the brain for processing most information.
Researchers believe using both sides of the brain is a compensatory action due to decreased efficiency of the brain. As we age, it's possible that the white matter linking the two sides of the brain decreases. Of course, more study needs to be done. In the meantime, lace up those sneakers and get your heart pumping.
