Why that sexy six-pack is eluding you

Many people exercise to stay healthy and feel good, but we all have a little vanity, and there are few women who wouldn't mind flaunting a well-cut mid section.

But how?

For most ordinary people, this goal is not unattainable, but it is audacious.  That's because the six-pack reveals itself not only when the muscle is well conditioned from exercise, but when there is little fat on the body to hide it.  (This principle, by the way, can be applied to any muscle group.  If you are frustrated because you've been working your quads or triceps furiously yet you cannot see definition, your well toned muscles may be hiding under a layer of fat). 

If you want to develop washboard abs, you'll have to create a multi-disciplinary approach to exercise and health.  Here's what you'll need to do:
  1. Strengthen your abs by conducting a variety of exercises that condition the rectus abdominis, obliques, and transverse abdominis.  (Think not just crunches, but traditional planks, side planks, and abdominal exercises that require rotation) 
  2. Add cardiovascular training to your list of activities to burn fat
  3. Keep you overall weight in check by following a diet rich in fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and "good" fats like olive oil and avocado
