Let Your Child Inspire Your Next Workout

Children are great for getting us outside to enjoy exercise away from the gym. They are also great for reminding us of the joy, excitement, and challenge of moving the body. The awe and pride a child has when he first takes a step reminds us how incredible our physical abilities are. Children display this awe all the time, as they first roll over, practice their run, and learn to ride bikes.
This spring, capture some of this deep joy and awe at what your body can do.

Yesterday, my husband and I went out to New Jersey's South Mountain Reservation. We took 5 kids, 4 scooters, and a wagon. When one of the younger ones tired of trying to balance on the scooter, I decided to give it a whirl. If you haven't gotten on your child's scooter, you must give it a whirl. They are fun! They make exercise fun. Take long strides on the scooter as you climb up a hill. You'll feel your quads. You'll also feel the stabilizing muscles on the leg you've planted on the scooter. Work hard and your butt, hamstrings, and hips will feel your effort to balance on that scooter! Weave it back and forth while trying to maintain good posture. You'll get a great core workout. If you are feeling adventurous, try a yoga pose while gliding on the scooter.

A workout outside with your child's latest exercise gear will have you invigorated. In fact, you may want to do it again tomorrow. That is inspired exercise, just as it should be.
