Taxes and Waxes

Last weekend the New York Times reported that New Jersey, my home state, has the highest cost of living, the highest per capita tax rate, and the second highest housing costs of any other state.

We moved to New Jersey two and a half years ago so my husband could pursue an opportunity in banking in NYC. The financial capital of the world, we thought. How exciting! Well, I guess you can imagine how that turned out.

So my husband got laid off and our first thought was, "we've got to get out of this state." New Jersey has, no kidding, bled us of all of our money. Right now, we are in the process of selling our house and about a quarter of its contents, all in an effort to survive this recession. Depressing, huh?

And if things didn't look bleak enough, then we find out that The New Jersey Cosmetology and Hairstyling Board is leaning towards banning Brazilian waxes on April 14!

Talk about adding insult to injury. Not only are families suffering vast financial woes, but now they may suffer vast female overgrowth as well. Think of the countless relationships that would be negatively affected by such a ban, not to mention the absolutely horrifying view that would most likely emerge at the local pools and beaches. Will the good women of NJ really have to cross state lines in order to be bikini ready this summer?

Sometimes I wonder just how much more we can take, and I shudder to think what might be next. Do you think that they might shut down all the local playgrounds because they've determined that there is some fatal chemical in the wood chips? Come to think of it, this idea is probably not all that far fetched. What a society we live in....
